Extension of Abe Shooter’s Psychiatric Evaluation Canceled

The defense team for the suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, 42, who has been sent to public prosecutors on suspicion of murder, had filed a quasi-appeal against the summary court’s decision, made on Monday, to push back the end date of the evaluation period to Jan. 23 next year from Jan. 10 in the same year.

The district court accepted the quasi-appeal, saying that it is difficult to acknowledge the need for a further extension and that it is also not reasonable to have the period extended in consideration of disadvantages to be created for the suspect, according to the defense team.

Hearings begin regarding Hokkaido welfare facilities where sterilization procedures for disabled persons were allegedly “not forced”

On December 19, the Hokkaido prefectural government began interviewing facility staff regarding the issue of a group home ran by the ‘Asunaro Welfare Association’ social welfare corporation in the town of Esashi, Hokkaido, that had requested sterilization for intellectually disabled couples.

“Despicable” former Kyoto workshop worker sentenced to five years in prison for sexually assaulting two disabled women

A 29-year-old man, a former employee of a workshop for the disabled, was accused of quasi-forced sexual intercourse and quasi-forced indecency for sexually assaulting two women with severe intellectual disabilities. It was held at the Otsu District Court on the 15th. Presiding Judge Yasushi Hatayama handed down a sentence of 5 years imprisonment for “an extremely despicable and vicious crime”.
