Japan’s top medical group to admit responsibility, apologize over forced sterilization

The Japanese Medical Science Federation is set to admit the responsibility of medical scientists and academic associations over forced sterilization surgeries that were carried out in Japan based on the now-defunct eugenics protection law (1948-1996), and is poised to apologize to victims, it has been learned.

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, the investigation into abuse of people with disabilities at a facility in Kanagawa prefecture is about to be dismissed. New suspicions of abuse emerged last autumn regarding the “Tsukui Yamayurien” facility in Sagamihara City, in Kanagawa Prefecture, which became a stage of mass murder four years ago. The prefecture suddenly announced on May 18 that it would stop verifying cases of abuse, and some are skeptical.

What is a ‘Barrier Free Mind’?

The government newly presented measures for not only hard aspects but also soft aspects with the revision of the law for 18 years, and announced the promotion of “barrier-free mind”. It encourages municipalities to create and provide barrier-free maps that show the location of slopes and toilets for people with disabilities in the city, and requests business operators to train staff.
