After more than 400 years, the iconic Nagoya Castle is under siege, this time by those wanting to make it more accessible to wheelchair-users and those who are determined to keep it as original as possible.

At a town hall meeting on the planned reconstruction of the castle here on June 3, a man scolded a wheelchair-user.

“Don’t confuse equality with your selfishness,” the man said. “How dare you be so selfish.”

Maebashi Court Orders Man to Pay 960,000 Yen in Damages Over Disability Hate Speech on Online Anonymous Bulletin Board Despite Defamation Claim Rejected

Maebashi District Court has ordered a man who made a post on an anonymous bulletin board on the Internet to pay 960,000 yen in damages.

Kazuaki Hyodo (48), a man with severe disabilities from Maebashi City, was seeking approximately 1.95 million yen in damages from the man who made the post, in Tokyo, for suffering mental pain after being defamed on an anonymous bulletin board on the Internet. On December 8th, the Maebashi District Court (presiding judge Ritsuko Jinno) handed down a judgment ordering the man [who posted] to pay approximately 960,000 yen.

Japan’s Cabinet Office opens “Connection Contact Window” for Consultation on Eliminating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities

On October 16th, the Cabinet Office opened a “Tsunagu Desk” to respond to consultations aimed at eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities. In April next year, companies and other private businesses will be required to make “reasonable accommodations” such as installing ramps for wheelchair users and providing written communication, so the government will support smooth implementation.

70% of ‘Special Needs Schools’ in Japan Prohibit Male-Female Relationships for Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Survey

Yuko Kadoshita, a visiting researcher at Toyo University, conducted the survey in 2021. 466 people responded, with 5.6% saying that dating is “prohibited” and 63.3% saying that “it is not prohibited but there are rules. 30.0% said “no ban and no rules.”
