Princess Kako attends ceremony marking 70th anniversary of association for families of people with intellectual disabilities

Princess Kako, the second daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, attended a ceremony in Tokyo’s Ota Ward on Saturday marking the 70th anniversary of the National Federation of Associations for the Welfare of the Mentally Disabled, a group made up of families and supporters of people with intellectual disabilities. Around 2,000 people took part in the event, where Princess Kako expressed her “heartfelt respect” for the attendees and said she hopes understanding of intellectual disabilities will continue to deepen so that “everyone can live with peace of mind.”

Tokyo Deaflympics: Japan-made light signals used alongside pistols to start races

At the Deaflympics to kick off in Tokyo next week, “start lamps” will be used along with pistols on the racetrack as one of the innovative ways competitions are being adapted for hearing-impaired athletes.Masahisa Takemi, 50, a teacher at Tokyo Metropolitan Chuo School for the Deaf, created the signals to be used at the Nov. 15-26 games. “I want to create an environment where people do not have to give up despite their disabilities,” he said.

North Korea fires ballistic missile toward Sea of Japan

North Korea launched a ballistic missile Friday that apparently fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone, the Japanese government said, warning of the possibility of further provocations from Pyongyang. The missile, the second of its kind to be launched since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took office on Oct. 21, was fired at around 12:34 p.m. eastward from North Korea’s west coast and flew more than 450 kilometers at an altitude of up to 50 km, the Defense Ministry said.
