Japan Top Court Upholds Order to Dissolve Unification Church

Japan’s Supreme Court has upheld lower court rulings ordering the dissolution of the controversial religious group known as the Unification Church, rejecting a special appeal filed by the organization. In the ruling dated Monday, the court’s Third Petty Bench, presided over by Justice Eriko Watanabe, said the dissolution order “does not violate the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion and association.” The four justices unanimously supported the decision.

At least 40 billion yen in deposits and savings have been secured during the liquidation process of the Unification Church in Japan, it was learned on Wednesday 22nd April. Also on Wednesday, it was publicly announced that claims of losses from large donations to the Unification Church will be accepted for a year from May 20.

Unification Church Believers Eye New Organization for Continuation

The planned organization may not have legal status. It is expected to be led by Masaichi Hori, a former head of the Unification Church in Japan, according to the sources. As the liquidation process of the religious group is underway, about 280 churches of the group cannot be used, leaving about 100,000 believers to worship at home or online. The new organization would accept donations and manage funds, the sources said.
