Disability News Japan Podcast: Mark Bookman (1991 – 2022) In Remembrance & Action One Year Later

It has been one year since Mark Bookman a historian, whose specialism was disability policy died on December 16th 2022.

Before he died, Mark was working on a new project; a charity that would help organisations such as governments & businesses include people with disabilities. The charity is called ‘GLIDE’ or ‘Global Leaders in International Disability Education’. The documentary “Mark – A Call to Action” produced by GLIDE will premiere in February 2024.

Disability News Japan Podcast: Disability Welfare Organizations Highlight Staff Shortages Ahead of Next Fiscal Year

In preparation for the next fiscal year’s revision of compensation for welfare services for persons with disabilities, Kyosaren, a Tokyo-based national organization that supports persons with disabilities, submitted a petition signed by 1,411 organizations to Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare Keizo Takemi on December 8th, requesting a positive revision of basic compensation in light of the severe operating environment at service centers, including a serious labor shortage.

Eisai-Biogen Alzheimer’s Therapy to Cost 2.98 million Yen Per Year

A single course of treatment with an Alzheimer’s drug developed by Japanese company Eisai Co. and U.S. firm Biogen Inc. will cost around 2.98 million yen ($20,500) per year in Japan and will be largely covered by public health insurance, a health ministry body said Wednesday.

As the drug, branded Leqembi, will be covered by public health insurance, those undergoing treatment will pay between 10 to 30 percent of the cost out of their own pocket, depending on their age and income.

Eight Incidents of Osaka Residents with Disabilities ‘My Number’ Information Incorrectly Linked, No Leakage of Personal Data Confirmed

On December 12th, the Osaka Prefectural Government announced that, as a result of the comprehensive inspection following a series of problems with the My Number system, it had found a total of eight cases of errors in which information relating to a prefectural resident’s disability certificate was linked to the My Number of another person. At the request of the national government, information on approximately 70,000 diaries had been investigated by the end of November. No leakage of personal information has been confirmed.

Disability News Japan Podcast: Parents of Severely Disabled Boy Lose Appeal Claiming Son Illegally Sent to Special Needs School

Japan’s Supreme Court has rejected an appeal by the parents of a boy from Kawasaki City against a lawsuit in which they sought damages from Kanagawa Prefecture and the city on the grounds that it was illegal for the boy to be designated to a special-needs school on the grounds of severe disability.
