Over 300 unaccounted for after Japan quake, snow hampers rescue work, fear of COVID spreading at evacuation centers

The death toll from a New Year’s Day earthquake in central Japan rose to 168 on Monday, with more than 300 unaccounted for, authorities said, as snow and rain hamper rescue operations and efforts to relocate survivors to hotels amid fears of COVID-19 spreading in evacuation centers.

The number of people unable to be contacted increased by more than 100 from Sunday to 323, including 281 in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, according to the prefectural government.

The death toll from the 7.6-magnitude earthquake that recently struck Ishikawa Prefecture’s Noto Peninsula rose to 168 in the central Japan prefecture on Monday.

An additional 323 people were unaccounted for after the Jan. 1 temblor, which logged a seismic intensity of up to 7, highest on the country’s scale.

Four male passengers were injured in a knife attack on East Japan Railway Co.’s Yamanote Line in Tokyo Wednesday night, the Tokyo Fire Department said.
A knife-wielding woman, apparently in her 20s, was arrested at JR Akihabara Station by Tokyo’s Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of attempted murder.

Tottori Prefecture reports six confirmed cases of abuse of persons with disabilities occurred in FY2022

Tottori Prefecture announced that in fiscal year 2022, there were 38 consultations regarding abuse of persons with disabilities reported within the prefecture (45 in the previous year). Of these, six cases (compared to nine cases last year) were confirmed as cases where the victim had suffered or was suspected of having been abused.
