An ambulance crew in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, returned an injured man to the scene of a traffic accident and left him there after a hospital refused to accept him because he had tested positive for the coronavirus, the city’s fire department told the Mainichi Shimbun on Aug. 12.
An NPO that supports the independent living of people with disabilities in Tokyo’s Edogawa Ward is looking for evacuation measures for people with severe disabilities in preparation for large-scale floods. The welfare evacuation shelters designated by the ward are limited to one companion, making it difficult for people with disabilities who need multiple hands to assist. However, even if you try to evacuate outside the ward with a helper or family before a typhoon hits, there are problems associated with traveling long distances.
This fiscal year, Japan’s Ministry of Justice will begin a five-year model project using about 50 inmates with intellectual disabilities detained at Nagasaki Prison and help them reintegrate into society.
A Tokyo-based nonprofit organization is suspected of having facilitated an overseas living donor kidney transplant that used a trafficked kidney. According to the Okayama Labor Bureau, there were 1,904 cases of persons with disabilities finding employment through Hello Work in the prefecture last fiscal year, an increase of 149 cases, or 8.5%, from the previous fiscal year, the first increase in two years.
As the spread of the new coronavirus continues, medical teams have been dispatched to facilities for people with disabilities, where normal infection control measures are difficult, such as being unable to wear masks, and efforts have begun to provide guidance on infection control measures.
According to the police report, on the morning of July 4, at a facility for people with disabilities in Shibukawa City, a man in his 30s was suspected of injuring a resident of the facility by hitting him in the face with his fist.
About 60% of local governments nationwide do not disclose information about fatal accidents reported by nursing homes and other elderly facilities, according to a Yomiuri Shimbun survey.
Speaking at a July 26 ceremony marking the tragic deaths, the father of one of the residents pledged to help build a more inclusive society. “It is difficult to find answers to the question of what needs to be done, but we must make the effort,” said Otsuki Kazuma.
Keen to offer Japanese gamers with disabilities a chance to be part of the action, social welfare worker Daiki Kato founded a company called ePara in 2016.
