Japan Health Insurance Premium Rate to Hit Record High

The average premium rate at corporate health insurance societies in Japan is projected to hit a record high of 9.32 pct in fiscal 2024, according to the National Federation of Health Insurance Societies, or Kenporen. Reflecting an increase in contributions to the medical care services for the elderly, the rate is expected to rise 0.05 percentage point from the previous year, which ended in March, the group of health insurance societies for employees of large corporations and their families said Tuesday.

Last year, there were 15 cases of erroneous issuance through the system. Although the system operator took corrective measures, including fixing the program, the latest problem occurred. Some of those errors included some individuals’ disability welfare and health-related information being ‘linked’ to the wrong My Number account. The most recent case of such a mistake was reported by Aichi Prefecture in March 2024 when 95 new cases of incorrect linking were confirmed.

The remuneration paid by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare to “welfare service offices for persons with disabilities” will be revised in April, and at some businesses, the remuneration will be paid according to the amount of time users receive services. Some of the businesses that may see a significant decrease in remuneration have voiced their concerns that they will not be able to continue their business, and the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare is considering how to respond to this issue.

Japan’s Welfare Benefit Claims Up for 4th Year in 2023, Single Mothers and Disabled Comprise 15.8% of Applicants

The number of welfare benefit applications stood at 255,079 in Japan in 2023, rising for the fourth consecutive year, the welfare ministry said Wednesday.

Households that fall under the “others” category, which includes those led by unemployed people but excludes those led by single mothers and people with disabilities or disease, accounted for 15.8 pct.
