Visually Impaired Woman from Fukuoka Devises Method of Putting Makeup on for the Blind, Wins ‘Citizen of the Year’ Award

The team, led by Ms. Misuzu Hojo, 31, who herself is visually impaired, has devised a makeup method using the fingers of both hands and has been spreading the method through lectures. At a ceremony held in Tokyo on January 29th Ms. Hojo expressed her dream: “In the future, I would like to hold a fashion show where visually impaired people who put on their own makeup can stand on stage and enjoy the show, even if they are blind or have difficulty seeing.”

On November 22nd, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced through a press release that it is offering 200 tickers for spectators who have visual impairments for free for the Paris Paralympic Qualifier IBSA Judo Grand Prix which is to be held on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th December 2023 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

70% of the visually impaired in Japan have difficulty using smartphones and PCs, National group survey indicates

A survey conducted by the Japan Federation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (JFV), a national organization, revealed on May 31 that of 853 people with disabilities surveyed regarding the use of digital devices such as smartphones and PCs, nearly 70% of the respondents answered that they have difficulties in terms of operating and other skills (technical skills). As digitization continues to advance, how to provide support for people with disabilities will become an issue.

Male JR East station staff attendant allegedly made numerous sexually explicit comments towards visually impaired woman

According to the JR East Metropolitan Area Headquarters, between around October last year and January this year, a male station staff member asked a visually impaired woman using the station, “I’d give you a piggy-back ride” and “Isn’t your chest heavy? Do you want me to carry you?” and other comments. After asking the woman what time she would be home, he invited her out to dinner and said he would go to her house.
