A hearing-impaired couple in their 70s from Nagoya City will sue the government for a total of approximately 30 million yen, claiming that they were sterilized under the former Eugenic Protection Law
The Osaka District Court on Thursday dismissed a damages lawsuit filed against the government by a couple with disabilities over forced sterilization conducted under the now-defunct eugenic protection law.The ruling came even after Osaka and Tokyo high courts ordered the government to pay damages in similar suits on forced sterilization in February and March, respectively.
The estimated number of people aged 65 or older in Japan stood at a record high of 36.27 million as of Thursday, rising by 60,000 from a year before and accounting for 29.1 pct of the nation’s total population, also the highest ever, the internal affairs ministry said.
