On February 13th. the Fukuoka Prefectural Police arrested a man, aged 48, on suspicion of forced obscene behavior with a girl with intellectual disabilities in a toilet. The suspect is reported to have said that he did it “to satisfy sexual desire.”
“Two and a half years have passed since the Kanagawa Prefectural Board of Education accepted students with intellectual disabilities in ‘mainstream’ schools in three prefectural high schools. These students will graduate in March next year.”
“The suspect is reported to have said, “I thought that a child with intellectual disabilities would come home,” “I can no longer control my feelings about her.””
“According to officials, the eldest son had a disability, and the defendant stated at the investigation stage that he “worried about his son’s future”.”
“On August 22nd, the Oita District Court ruled in a lawsuit in which the plaintiffs, were seeking damages totaling approximately 53.64 million yen. The case concerned an incident that occurred in 2014, when an unemployed man with an intellectual disability aged 42 and the caretaker managing the apartment where he lived, who was aged 62, both died following an altercation.”
“The police station requested the woman voluntarily come to the station in May, and the woman visited the station with her mother. The clerk collected DNA from the woman’s mouth. The station claims that the collection was made with written consent. On the other hand, the woman said that she “did not agree” and that her mother did not approve. The station sent a document to the woman for allegedly damaging the property.”
“The corporation that operates the facility offered a payment of 18 million yen, but the bereaved family said, “..there is a difference in the amount of compensation between the healthy person and the disabled person…I am against it,” and was seeking compensation of more than 72 million yen, the same amount as a healthy person.”
“Kanagawa prefectural police said Thursday they have arrested a 29-year-old man of no fixed occupation on suspicion of kidnapping a 15-year-old intellectually disabled girl from a shopping mall.”
“An increasing number of prefectural governments and ordinance-designated major cities in Japan are expanding the scope of disabled people qualified to take exams for regular jobs at the public-sector offices to include those with mental or intellectual disabilities. Previously, the job exams had been available to people with physical disabilities.”
“To deepen an understanding about the “lack of understanding” that people with autism and other intellectual disabilities experience in their daily lives, the NPO ‘Nuturing Society Connecting Hands in Sanda City’, an NPO that holds workshops in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture (amongst other places), for disabled people and their families has been formed. “
