Elderly vaccination pace varies among cities in Japan

A survey found that four cities — including Sakai, Osaka Prefecture — have administered a first shot to over 50% of their populations, while another 14 cities — including Yamaguchi — have cleared the 40% threshold. Rounding out the bottom of the list were 15 municipalities where fewer than 20% of elderly residents had received their first shot.

Fukushima Prefecture provides online training on infection control for elderly and disabled people

On May 25, Fukushima Prefecture held an online training session on countermeasures against the new coronavirus for employees of facilities for the elderly and disabled. The purpose was to prevent the outbreak of clusters. This is the first time that a prefectural government has held a training session for elderly welfare facilities and support facilities for the disabled.

COVID-19 Cluster found at Osaka care home for elderly, fourteen residents die

According to city officials and others, on April 11, two residents developed fever and were found to be positive in a PCR test. Subsequently, the infection spread within the facility, and 39 residents and 22 staff members were confirmed to be infected. Fourteen people died, including a resident who was recuperating at the facility because he could not find a place to be hospitalized.

Japan’s Health Ministry Report: Elderly People are Less Likely to See Vaccine Side Effects

Novel coronavirus vaccines are less likely to cause side effects for those aged 65 or older, Japan’s health ministry said Friday. The interim finding was reported at a meeting of the ministry’s expert panel on the relationship between coronavirus vaccines and side effects. Japan is slated to begin administering vaccines to elderly citizens Monday.
