Japan Society for Gender Dysphoria Renamed as “It’s not a disorder”

What was formerly the GID (Gender Identity Disorder) Society, which promotes research on transgender people whose minds and bodies do not match, officially announced at its general meeting held in Okinawa Prefecture on March 17th that it will change its name to the Japan GI (Gender Identity) Society. The name change was made in response to the growing belief that transgenderism is not a disorder and is no longer used as an international diagnostic name.

Tokyo Lawyers Offer Free Telephone Consultation “Human Rights for Disabled Persons 110” in ‘Disabled Persons Week’

To coincide with Disabled Persons Week, which started on the 3rd of this month, the “Human Rights of Persons with Disabilities 110 Hotline” is being held, where lawyers provide free consultations from people with disabilities and their families.

Every year, the three bar associations in Tokyo hold consultation sessions during Disability Week, where lawyers provide free consultation to people with disabilities and their families by phone or fax.

35% of Chiba residents with disabilities “felt” human rights violations

The results of the prefectural government’s Internet survey revealed that 35.3% of Chiba residents answered that they “felt” human rights violations against the disabled, and more than one out of three people believe that there are human rights violations. 17.3% answered that they “felt” human rights violations against LGBT and other sexual minorities.

‘Sagamihara Massacre’ municipal government to introduce human rights ordinance with penalties including fines

The preamble to the draft report mentions the 2016 massacre at care home Tsukui Yamayuri En, where 45 people were killed or injured in the city, and states that it was a “hate crime based on unreasonable discriminatory thinking toward people with disabilities.” It also mentions the establishment of a “human rights commission,” a relief organization for victims.

Japan’s Education Minister “not thinking” about ending segregated education for disabled, as suggested by U.N., claiming it promotes “inclusive education”

On September 13, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Keiko Nagaoka spoke to reporters after a Cabinet meeting, regarding the United Nations’ strong request to the Japanese government to end the current special needs education, citing that it is “separating” children with disabilities from regular education. At a press conference, she said, “I’m not thinking of canceling special needs education.”
