Japan publisher threatened over publication of trans-skeptical book

A Japanese publisher has received threats over its plan to publish a translated version of a controversial U.S. book questioning an increase in young women seeking gender transitions, its parent company said Saturday.

Sankei Shimbun Publications Inc. received an email threatening arson against bookstores that carried the book unless its publication was canceled, noting the work could promote discrimination against transgender people.

Japan Saw Record Ambulance Dispatches in 2023

There were 7,637,967 ambulance dispatches in Japan in 2023, the highest figure since comparable data became available in 1963, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said in a preliminary report Friday. From the previous year, ambulance dispatches increased 5.6 pct. The agency also said a record 6,639,959 people, up 6.8 pct, were transported by ambulance. Of them, probable sufferers of acute illnesses, such as COVID-19, accounted for 67.7 pct, far exceeding those inflicted “general” injuries, at 15.9 pct, and those involved in traffic accidents, at 5.4 pct.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Plans to Cover the Costs of Those Hospitalized Due to “beni koji” Supplement Health Issues

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical said that it plans to cover, at the very least, the treatment costs of hospitalized patients, outpatients and others. It will also offer similar compensation to affected users outside of Japan. According to the health ministry, 93 people have been hospitalized after taking the supplement products, with the company receiving around 12,000 inquiries as of Wednesday.

Two people who used the ‘beni koji’ health supplement have died, one of died of a kidney disease.
