Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced on September 8th that in fiscal year 2022, a total of 656 people with disabilities were found to have been abused by their superiors or employers in the workplace, an increase of 30.7% from the previous year.
When asked about their impression of businesses that employ people with disabilities on their behalf, about 29% said they had a bad impression, while 13% said they had a good impression, a difference of nearly twice as much.
This was 81 cases more than in the previous year, breaking the record for the fourth consecutive year since the statistics began in 1983. Of these, suicides and attempted suicides totaled 67, 12 fewer than in the previous year. By cause, power harassment accounted for the largest number of cases (147), once again highlighting the reality of a workplace that is not improving.
In addition to encouraging their participation in society, more products that demonstrate disabled people’s artistry and sense of design are hitting the market, with last year’s Tokyo Paralympic Games giving these initiatives even more momentum.
