Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Reports 3,079 Cases of Abuse Against Disabled Confirmed by Local Governments in 2022, Highest Recorded Number

Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced on December 20th that the number of cases of abuse against people with disabilities confirmed by prefectures and municipalities in fiscal 2022 was 3,079, an increase of 386 from the previous year, setting a new record high. The incident appears to have come to light partly because the government is requiring businesses to take measures to prevent abuse through the revision of remuneration for disability welfare services.

Disability News Japan Podcast: Manager of Facility for the Disabled Arrested by Osaka Prefectural Police for Assaulting Woman

On 15th December, the Osaka Prefectural Police arrested the manager (32) of a welfare facility for the disabled in Kaizuka City, Osaka Prefecture, on suspicion of assaulting a 48-year-old woman by dragging her and knocking her to the floor. He denies the charge, saying he dragged the woman but made a slight mistake in the part where he knocked her to the floor. The police will investigate the possibility that he may have assaulted the woman and other users.

The pictures of users’ faces had been doctored in a manner that could be interpreted as teasing. The city’s Disability Welfare Division is investigating the possibility of abuse.

The ‘Call4’ fundraising website points out that when the abuse of the three people with intellectual disabilities on the ranch was discovered “it covered up the fact and left it as it was. This seems to have been influenced by the fact that the ranch was run by a former Eniwa City Council member (chairman). This lawsuit seeks to hold Eniwa City responsible for concealing and neglecting the abuse of people with disabilities.”

“Besides being intellectually disabled, you are a human being.” Plaintiff claims in Hokkaido farm abuse lawsuit

Three men with intellectual disabilities filed a lawsuit asking the ranch owner’s family and the city to pay a total of approximately 94 million yen in damages, alleging that they were abused at the ranch where they lived and worked for many years (in Eniwa City, Hokkaido). According to the complaint, all three men are in their 60s and had been living and working at Endo Farm in the same city for 18 to 45 years. As a general rule, there were no days off, and he woke up around 3:30 a.m. and worked from dawn until dusk, milking cows and doing farm work, but he was not paid.

90 Pct of Children of Jehovah’s Witnesses Followers Whipped, Survey Shows

About 90 pct of children of followers of the Jehovah’s Witnesses religious organization have been whipped by their parents, a survey has found.

The survey, conducted by a group of lawyers who support victims of the cult, also found that some 80 pct of children of Jehovah’s Witnesses followers had carried a card indicating the holder’s intention to refuse blood transfusions.

Many Second-generation Jehovah’s Witnesses In Japan Experienced Abuse By Their Parents, Lawyer Alleges

On November 20th, a defense team supporting former members of the religious group Jehovah’s Witnesses held a press conference and stated that many second-generation parents who were raised by believer parents have experienced abuse from their parents.

The results of the survey have been published. The defense team is requesting that laws and regulations regarding abuse by religious groups be considered.

The results showed that 81% of those who cooperated with the survey said they had a card indicating their intention to refuse blood transfusions.
