Nagoya – Regarding the wooden reconstruction of the Nagoya Castle keep, Nagoya City is aiming to install a vertical lifting device, while disability organizations are calling for the installation of a large elevator. The two sides remain at odds, but Nagoya City says it hopes to present an overall plan for accessibility, including the lifting equipment, by February 2027.
Nagoya City has also begun conducting individual interviews with disability organizations in an effort to understand what kinds of accommodations are needed depending on the specific needs and characteristics of people with disabilities.
The interviews will continue through the end of August, and the city plans to explain the proposed facilities in November, incorporating the findings from these interviews.
The reconstruction of the Nagoya castle keep has caused controversy with the Aichi disability community, especially in 2023, when remarks which some thought discriminatory were said to a person with disabilities at a public meeting.
