Mie Prefecture Says Nurse Abused Hospitalized Disabled Child

Mie Prefecture – Mie Prefecture announced on the 25th that a nurse at a prefectural hospital where children with disabilities are hospitalized committed an act of abuse.

According to the prefectural government, a male nurse in his 40s working at the Prefectural Child Development Medical Center grabbed the wrist of an elementary school boy, who was hospitalized at the facility and lying on his back in a hallway, and dragged him approximately 10 meters in January this year.

The nurse said he was trying to return the boy, who was in an agitated state, to his room. During interviews conducted by the prefecture, he explained that his actions were intended “to prevent harm from coming to other children.”

The incident came to light following a report made to the prefecture in February. After interviewing the nurse and reviewing hospital security camera footage, the prefecture determined that the incident constituted physical abuse.

The prefecture has apologized to the boy and his parents and is now considering disciplinary action against the nurse.
