On Monday April 9th 2018, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced estimates that 936,600 people in Japan have either mental or physical disabilities.
The number of people with disabilities in Japan increased by about 1.49 million from the previous estimate of 2013 (about 7,879 thousand people). The proportion of Japan’s total population also increased from about 6.2% to about 7.4%.
The estimation was drawn from survey of living conditions for persons with disabilities that were implemented in 14 ~ 16 years, the number of disabled people was about 4.36 million (about 423 thousand more than last time), about 1082 thousand people with intellectually disabled (An increase of about 341,000 people), and about 3,924,000 people (about 723 thousand people increase) for mentally disabled people.
74% of the disabled people (69% in the previous estimate), 16% (9% of the mentally handicapped), 38% of the mentally disabled (69% of the disabled people) 36% same).
The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) states , in addition to an aging population, the increase in the number of people who are recognized as also increased.
