Japan to Start Phasing Out Traditional Health Insurance Cards

Most conventional public health insurance cards under the medical care system for the elderly and the national health insurance program will expire on Thursday as part of a full transition to a digital system. Starting Friday, people without a My Number personal identification card with health insurance card functions must present an eligibility certificate to receive medical care, in line with the shift to using My Number cards as health insurance cards.But to prevent confusion, the health ministry will allow conventional paper or plastic health insurance cards to be used until the end of March 2026 to receive medical care.

Some Functions of Japan’s My Number Card Now Available on iPhones

Japan on Tuesday started a service that allows some functions of the My Number personal identification card to be mounted on Apple Inc.’s iPhones. Through biometric authentication, iPhone users can now log in to the Mynaportal website for My Number-related administrative tasks and obtain copies of residential and other administrative certificates at convenience stores. The My Number card has functions to confirm the holder’s basic personal data, including the name and date of birth, and to serve as a digital certificate of the holder.

Japan’s My Number Card Functions to Be Available on iPhones

Japan will allow major functions of the My Number personal identification card to be available on iPhone smartphones from June 24, digital transformation minister Masaaki Taira said Friday. Users of Apple Inc.’s smartphones will be able to access the Mynaportal website for My Number-related administrative tasks and get copies of their public certificates at local convenience stores via iPhone-based biometric authentication. There will be no need to carry a physical My Number card.

(Update) Japan Government Stops Issuing New Health Insurance Cards as of Monday 2nd December 2024

The Japanese government will stop issuing new health insurance cards on Dec. 2 as planned in a move to integrate them into “My Number” electronic personal identification cards.While the government will stop issuing new health insurance cards on Monday, most people will remain unaffected by the move in the short term as existing health insurance cards can still be used for another year. People without My Number cards can still use their existing health insurance cards for their visits to hospitals, dental clinics and pharmacies during the grace period — which ends on Dec. 1, 2025 — as long as they remain valid.

Japan to Abolish Health Insurance Cards as Planned

Japanese digital minister Masaaki Taira reiterated that the government will stop issuing new health insurance cards on Dec. 2 as planned in a move to integrate them into “My Number” electronic personal identification cards. “There is no change in our policy to proceed (with the abolition) as scheduled,” Taira said in a recent interview. At the same time, Taira underscored the importance of the government making efforts to eliminate public distrust in problem-prone My Number cards.

Fujitsu Given Guidance over My Number System Problem

Last year, there were 15 cases of erroneous issuance through the system. Although the system operator took corrective measures, including fixing the program, the latest problem occurred. Some of those errors included some individuals’ disability welfare and health-related information being ‘linked’ to the wrong My Number account. The most recent case of such a mistake was reported by Aichi Prefecture in March 2024 when 95 new cases of incorrect linking were confirmed.

Japan to Abolish Health Insurance Cards on December 2 2024, Integrating Health Information into ‘My Number’ Social Security Cards

The government adopted an ordinance Friday to abolish the current health insurance cards Dec. 2, 2024, for integration into My Number social security and tax identification cards.

The new issuance of health insurance cards will be terminated on the day. Existing cards within the period of validity will remain usable for up to a year under a one-off measure.

Eight Incidents of Osaka Residents with Disabilities ‘My Number’ Information Incorrectly Linked, No Leakage of Personal Data Confirmed

On December 12th, the Osaka Prefectural Government announced that, as a result of the comprehensive inspection following a series of problems with the My Number system, it had found a total of eight cases of errors in which information relating to a prefectural resident’s disability certificate was linked to the My Number of another person. At the request of the national government, information on approximately 70,000 diaries had been investigated by the end of November. No leakage of personal information has been confirmed.
