Tokyo couple denied housing after disabilities revealed

A couple in Tokyo were all set to move into a new home when a real estate agent abruptly relayed a message from the apartment management company. “We regret to inform you that we cannot proceed with the contract.”They repeatedly tried to get an explanation from the company but could not gain access.
The couple then realized the company’s decision to reject their application came soon after the property owner learned about their mental disabilities.

Japan’s Empty Homes Targeted for Subsidy Program, as Rise in Elderly Households Threatens Wave of Vacancies

A model project is set to launch next fiscal year that will provide subsidies to keep homes from sitting vacant, it has been learned. This will be run by the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry. The project will target residential areas in major cities and neighboring areas and transform properties — including those about to be vacated by elderly people — into residences and community facilities suitable for families with children. The number of neglected vacant homes is increasing year by year, according to the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. In 2023, a record high 3.85 million units fell into this category.

Japan Govt to Help Elderly, Disabled And Others Rent Homes Despite Landlords Concern They May “cause trouble with neighbours”

The Japanese government plans to help the elderly, disabled and others rent homes, by creating an environment that allows landlords to rent properties to them with ease.

There are cases in which landlords refuse to rent properties to such people out of concern that they might default on rent, die alone or cause trouble with neighbors.
