Disability News Japan Podcast: On Recent Cases of Suspected Abuse at Mie Care Facilities

Some issues and incidents regarding people with disabilities in Japan seem to keep re-appearing and re-occurring. They also often seem to keep happening in the same place. A lot of the recent cases of suspected abuse of people with disabilities seem to occur in Tsu City in Mie Prefecture, western Japan. (Update) 656 Disabled Abused in the Workplace in FY2022

By types of abuse, 600 people suffered financial abuse, an increase of 180 from the previous year. Psychological abuse such as verbal abuse and discrimination occurred in 47 cases, followed by physical abuse such as assault in 24 cases. If more than one type of abuse is recognized for an individual, each is accounted for separately.

In terms of specific damage, there were cases where people were paid less than the local minimum wage, and cases where people suffered burns when a gas burner was pressed against their arms.

Disability News Japan Podcast: Nagano Government Revokes ‘Designated’ Status of Company Providing Employment Support for Disabled over Abuse

Nagano prefecture has taken administrative action to revoke the designation of a corporation operating an employment support facility for persons with disabilities in Ueda City, on the grounds that it had repeatedly abused several users. This is the first time that the prefecture has revoked the designation of a business that provides support to persons with disabilities.
