TOKYO – The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will hold the 25th Tokyo Skills Competition for Persons with Disabilities, known as the Tokyo Abilympics, on Feb. 20, 2027, and will accept applications from Oct. 19 to Nov. 13.

The competition aims to improve the vocational skills of people with disabilities, deepen public and corporate understanding of disability, and promote their employment by providing opportunities to demonstrate skills acquired through work and training.

The event, organised by the Tokyo branch of the Japan Organization for Employment of the Elderly, Persons with Disabilities and Job Seekers in cooperation with the metropolitan government, will feature 13 competition categories, with places for a total of 119 participants.

Gold, silver and bronze awards will be presented to top performers in each category. Gold medalists will also receive an award from the director-general of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Bureau of Industrial and Labour Affairs.

Top competitors are expected to be recommended to represent Tokyo at the 47th National Skills Competition for Persons with Disabilities, scheduled to take place in Aichi Prefecture in November 2027. In principle, one competitor from each category will be recommended.

The competition will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Tokyo Vocational Ability Development School for Persons with Disabilities in Kodaira, western Tokyo.

Applications must be submitted through an online form to be published on the website of the organisation’s Tokyo branch. Applicants’ eligibility will be reviewed, and participants will be selected and notified individually. Selection may be necessary if applications exceed the available places.

Additional activities, including sales stalls, a stamp rally and an awards ceremony, are also planned for the day of the competition.
