TOKYO – The opening ceremony for the 9th Special Olympics Japan Summer National Games, which brings together athletes with intellectual disabilities, was held on the 5th at Toyota Arena Tokyo in Koto Ward, Tokyo. About 1,200 athletes from all 47 prefectures are taking part, supported by a cumulative total of approximately 3,300 volunteers. The sporting event, which aims to embody an inclusive society where people live together regardless of disability, officially got underway.
During the athletes’ oath, track and field competitor Kosui Iseya of the Tokyo delegation declared, “Even if we do not win, please give us the courage to do our best.”
The Special Olympics aims to provide enjoyable opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities, who are often said to have fewer chances to participate in sports. The national games will feature a total of nine sports, held across this month and September. Events taking place through the 7th at venues around Tokyo include basketball, tennis, and other competitions.
