Ten cases of abuse of people with disabilities at Kagoshima facilities, locked in rooms, verbally abused

According to the corporation, in July 2022, one staff member locked a resident who was trying to hit another resident in a locked room from the outside for about four hours and did not give him lunch. Another staff member verbally abused him, calling him "stupid”.

KAGOSHIMA – On January 6, it was learned that the city had instructed the care corporation “Seichokai” – “Blue Bird Society”- in writing in December 2022 to improve their facility due to a total of 10 cases of psychological abuse.

In September of the same year, after receiving a report from the facility, the city conducted an on-site investigation of the facility in accordance with the Law for the Prevention of Cruelty to Persons with Disabilities.

According to the corporation, in July 2022, one staff member locked a resident who was trying to hit another resident in a locked room from the outside for about four hours and did not give him lunch. Another staff member verbally abused him, calling him “stupid”.

It was discovered after several staff members reported it to the facility. The corporation has already taken disciplinary action against five employees who abused them.
