OKINAWA – A new volunteer group has been established to support the use of smartphones and apps in an effort to eliminate the information gap caused by visual impairment.
The Prefectural Visually Impaired Support Center was established by volunteers with visual impairments, and supports the visually impaired in obtaining and disseminating information by using smartphones with text-to-speech functions and voice apps.
Izumi, the representative, said that he himself had a hard time getting used to using a smartphone, and that he would like to support people who are struggling in the same way.
Izumi Yoshi, representative of the Prefectural Visually Impaired Support Center said:
“We provide telephone support, but if you have any problems, please feel free to contact us.”
The support center plans to expand its scope of activities in the future, such as accepting consultations about daily life and employment.
