JAPAN – On October 16th, the Cabinet Office opened a “Tsunagu Desk” to respond to consultations aimed at eliminating discrimination against people with disabilities. In April next year, companies and other private businesses will be required to make “reasonable accommodations” such as installing ramps for wheelchair users and providing written communication, so the government will support smooth implementation. It accepts consultations by phone and email from people and businesses with disabilities, and relays them to related ministries and agencies and local governments.

Reasonable accommodation is already mandatory for the national and local governments, and private businesses are currently required to make efforts. The Tsunagu Desk accepts inquiries such as “I have been subjected to discriminatory treatment and don’t know where to turn,” and “How should I respond to requests for accommodations from people with disabilities?”

Telephone number: (0120) 262701.
