TOKYO – A nonpartisan group of House of Councillors lawmakers Monday agreed on the early completion of renovation work to improve barrier-free access in the upper chamber of the Diet, Japan’s parliament.

Some 900 million yen is expected to be necessary to carry out all items in the renovation plan. The Upper House barrier-free promotion project team hopes to include related costs in an upcoming draft supplementary budget for fiscal 2019.

The team agreed on 14 items, including the establishment of a removable ramp in the main chamber where plenary meetings are held, so that disabled lawmakers can go to the podium from benches using a large wheelchair, and the introduction of a wheelchair lift at the Upper House’s main entrance.

Renovation work will also take place for gallery seats in the Upper House committee room annex to accommodate large wheelchairs.

The draft of the plan was written by the ruling bloc. Both the ruling and opposition sides see an urgent need to discuss the plan.
