Forced Sterilization case is heard at the Kobe District Court

On May 23rd, the Kobe District Court heard oral arguments regarding a case filed in February, a lawsuit seeking damages from the government about a woman being forced to undergo infertility treatment under the former Eugenics Protection Act (1948-96). Yumi Suzuki (63) in Kobe City, who has a physical disability affecting her hands, appeared in a wheelchair and made a statement, saying: “I wanted to give birth to bring up my own child.”

Ms. Suzuki explained that at the age of 12 she was afraid of the operation she received without being informed. She stated that she had filed a lawsuit saying;

“If you have not experienced the kind of discrimination the disabled have received, then you cannot understand it.”
