Employment of Disabled People in Japan at 14 Year Record High

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare  persons with disabilities working at private companies with 50 or more employees reached 497,795 (4.5% increase from the previous year) as of June 1 of this year (2017), the highest level for 14 consecutive years . On the other hand, about 30% of the subjects surveyed did not employ one person.

The ministry requested reports on the employment situation of persons with disabilities (bodily, intellectual, mental) for 90,124 companies etc. with 50 or more employees. 50% of enterprises satisfied the statutory employment rate (2%) obliged by the Employment Promotion Promotion Act for People with Disabilities, recovered 50% for the first time in 19 years.

There are 26,692 companies, amounting to 29.3%, who do not employ a disabled person.  96% of such businesses were small business with less than 50 to 100 employees.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Employment Policy Division for Persons with Disabilities stated that companies are understanding about employment of persons with disabilities, and will continue guidance and support to companies that have not achieved their duties. ”
