The Emperor and Empress attended a ceremony to honour those who have made efforts to improve the welfare of the disabled.
The 3rd to 9th of this month is Disabled Persons Week, and the Emperor and Empress arrived at the venue of the awards ceremony in Koto-ku, Tokyo, shortly after 2pm, where they were met by officials.
The Emperor of Japan said:
“I would like to make this address in the hope that, through Disability Week, people’s understanding of and interest in disability and people with disabilities will further expand and that a truly ‘symbiotic society’ will be realised.”
At the ceremony, elementary and junior high school students and others who won the best essay and poster prizes for their essays and posters in connection with Disability Week were presented with awards.
Awards were also presented to those who, over the years, have worked to promote the independence and social participation of people with disabilities and have made efforts to improve their welfare.
