A former care worker on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to charges of killing three residents at a nursing home for the elderly in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, south of Tokyo, by throwing them off the facility’s balconies.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” said the 25-year-old defendant, Hayato Imai, in the first hearing of his lay judge trial held at Yokohama District Court.

Public prosecutors plan to present circumstantial evidence to support the charges against Imai due to a lack of direct evidence linking him to the three deaths, such as eyewitness accounts and security camera footage.

The defense counsel plans to contest the charges.

The trial is scheduled to conclude on March 1, and a ruling is expected to be delivered by the end of March.
