TOKYO – Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party is assured of securing a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives following Sunday’s general election, delivering a decisive victory that strengthens Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s ability to advance her conservative policy program.
Surpassing the two-thirds threshold of 310 seats in the 465-member lower house would enable the LDP to pursue constitutional revision initiatives and pass legislation even in cases where bills are rejected by the House of Councillors, where the ruling coalition remains in the minority.
Meanwhile, the minor populist party Sanseito expanded its representation more than sixfold, winning 13 seats compared with two prior to the election, though its leader indicated dissatisfaction with the result.
Team Mirai, which promotes the use of digital technology to broaden political participation, captured its first seat in the lower chamber, according to early vote tallies.
