Sanae Takaichi Becomes New LDP Leader, Promises Economic Relief and Party Unity

Sanae Takaichi was elected leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Saturday, paving the way for her to become the nation’s next prime minister. She pledged to address rising prices and said she would not rule out a consumption tax cut, while also exploring a refundable tax credit system. At her first press conference, Takaichi vowed to form an inclusive leadership team, drawing on members from all generations, including her four rivals in the LDP race. She also signaled she would not exclude lawmakers linked to a recent political funds scandal from key posts, stating it would not affect her personnel decisions. TOKYOSanae Takaichi was elected as the new leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Saturday, positioning her to become the country’s next prime minister. At her inaugural press conference, Takaichi pledged to tackle pressing economic issues, including rising consumer prices, and suggested that a cut to the consumption tax would not be ruled out.

Takaichi also signaled the LDP would begin internal discussions on introducing a refundable tax credit program, aimed at easing financial burdens on households. Emphasizing a broad and inclusive leadership style, she promised to bring together party members across all generations, including her four former rivals in the leadership race.

Takaichi indicated she would not exclude from her administration those who had previously been embroiled in a political funds scandal that led to the dissolution of several intraparty factions. “It won’t affect my personnel appointments,” she stated.

She plans to finalize executive party appointments within the coming week, with particular attention to the role of secretary-general, a post she said should be held by someone who “can engage with all parties and has a broad view of the party.”

Outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, speaking at a meeting of LDP lawmakers following the leadership election, called for “solidarity and tolerance” as the party transitions to new leadership. “All countries are struggling with conflict and division. We must show solidarity and tolerance to the world,” he said. Ishiba expressed hope that under Takaichi’s leadership, the LDP would “unite and fulfill its responsibilities for the state, its people, the world, and the next generation.”

While Ishiba declined to reveal whom he voted for in the leadership race, he voiced confidence in Takaichi’s leadership. “I hope she will guide our country in the right direction amid the difficult international situation,” he said.
