TOKYO -A quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 rattled a group of small islands in southwestern Japan but no tsunami warning was issued, the country’s weather agency said.
The quake occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in waters near the Tokara island chain and its depth was very shallow, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, adding it measured lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Toshima, Kagoshima Prefecture.
A lower 5 is defined by the agency as a situation in which many people would be frightened and feel the need to hold onto something stable, while dishes and books on the shelves may fall.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, local authorities said.
The Tokara island chain, known for being seismically active, has been hit by strong quakes since earlier this year.
